The word Reiki is Japanese, with Rei meaning universal, and ki meaning life energy. This is similar to Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine and prana in Ayurvedic Medicine. Reiki utilizes this universal energy to remove energetic imbalances or blockages in energy flow by the practitioner holding their hands over the body, or with permission, a light touch in order to restore balance to the energy flow of the body. It is non-invasive and cannot be harmful. It is considered a complimentary therapy and is not used to replace other therapies.
Reiki activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which is how the body rests and restores itself. Reiki helps the body into deep relaxation where it can begin to heal itself. Reiki has been used to help alleviate stress, pain, and reduce blood pressure and heart rate. It can help with sleep, anxiety, depression, and mood in general. It also can increase heart rate variability, which helps with having a sense of well-being, (what kind of) stress response, and cardiovascular health.
For those who would like a more scientific explanation for how Reiki works:
Reiki works with the electromagnetic field around the body known as the biofield. This electromagnetic field is in and around all living tissue. A magnetic field, “describes a volume of space where there is a change in energy” and that is “produced whenever electrical charge is in motion. The spinning and orbiting of the nucleus of an atom produces a magnetic field…” These fields, per thewonderofscience.com, “can transmit energy across space from one object to another. When two objects interacting through a force field change relative position, the energy in the force field is changed.” These can change psychological and physiological activities in living tissue.
