Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese wholistic medicine. Its documentation began at approximately 2,600 BC with the Huang Di Nei Jing. It balances Qi (life force energy) through meridians, or pathways, to restore and heal the body. Acupuncture, in Western terms, regulates and improves the functions of neurotransmitters, hormones, functional energy, connective tissues, nerve transmission, and metabolic components in blood (white blood cells, oxygen).
In acupuncture, we ask all sorts of questions about all areas of health, not just about the ones that are causing problems. We also ask about mental health, stressors, and methods of coping. Health includes every part of a person. Asking these questions helps us to create a very personalized plan for treatment.
We place very thin (the thickness of a hair), sterile needles in very specific locations in very specific ways in order to maximize benefits to the body and to relieve symptoms tailored to each patient. When the needles are placed, there can be sensations of heaviness, warmth, tingling, or others, and these are normal. They should not be painful. We can also utilize cupping, tuning forks (instead of needles if needed), tui na (Chinese medical massage), nutritional guidance, gua sha, which is a scraping technique that helps many conditions such as muscle pain, chronic pain, and promote blood flow. Moxa (an herbal heat therapy) can also be used if circumstances allow.
Acupuncture can treat a variety of concerns such as: Chronic pain, Acute pain, post-operative pain, muscle tension, headaches, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, throat pain, sinus pain and drainage, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, problems with urination, edema, rash, insomnia, stress, trauma, allergies, addiction, depression, anxiety, infertility, menstrual cramping, menstrual problems, asthma, fibromyalgia, and more
One of the things I love most about acupuncture; it focuses on how to help people become and stay healthy and more resilient, rather than only focusing on healthcare when something is wrong. It also focuses on the person as a whole, rather than solely on the presenting issue.
